Ancient languages are a fascinating part of our collective linguistic and cultural heritage, but tuition is often only available on specialised degree courses and at a limited number of schools and universities. It can be difficult for independent learners to identify and select modern, affordable, accessible learning tools and to get expert guidance. Because of the comparatively small number of teaching academics working in the field, there are far fewer online learning resources for ancient than for modern languages.

​​I develop online learning activities and resources for ancient languages. I will publish updates on larger projects on this website; for the time being I am sharing some learning games on the resources pages, which I hope you will enjoy and find useful. I add new resources periodically, so do check back or join the mailing list.

I have started a blog offering information and insights for learners of ancient languages and focusing on the languages of the Classical and Egyptian civilisations. If there are topics that you would like addressed, please contact me.

When my schedule allows, I teach one-to-one and small group online lessons in Middle Egyptian hieroglyphs, Coptic and Latin for adults from complete beginners to advanced (undergraduate and postgraduate) students. I also teach demotic Egyptian and ancient Greek and may start online lessons in these languages in the future.
About me

I have a degree in Classics, Coptic and Aramaic, a Master's, PhD and published research in ancient Egyptian language (hieroglyphs and demotic), a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in Latin with Classics, and many years' experience teaching ancient languages to undergraduate and postgraduate, secondary school and independent students.
My goal is to spread knowledge about the languages of the ancient world and to make quality learning resources for ancient languages available to dedicated students everywhere, regardless of previous experience.
