Pliny's Vesuvius letter

Translations of the labels:

  • avunculus meus - my maternal uncle (in his letter, Pliny the Younger is writing about his uncle, Pliny the Elder)

  • "fortes fortuna adiuvat!" - "Fortune helps the brave!" (what Pliny says when he decides to press on with his rescue attempt even as conditions worsen)

  • mons - mountain

  • ut se tanto discrimini eriperet orabat - she was begging him to rescue her from such great danger (a plea from a friend of Pliny's, sent to him in a letter)

  • rectum cursum recta gubernacula in periculum tenet - he [Pliny the Elder] held [historic present] a straight course with a straight rudder into the danger

  • navibus cinis incidebat - ash was falling on the ships

  • mare - sea

  • quadriremis - warship
